Smart casual, explained
The most-used and least-clear dress code. Here is what it actually means, and how to build it.

The where
Setting
The middle ground: dressier than jeans and a tee, more relaxed than a suit. Offices, dinners, and events that say smart casual.
Weather
Usually indoors. A blazer or a knit doubles as your layer.
Formality
Relaxed to polished
Vibe
Palette
Smart casual is the dress code everyone uses and nobody defines. The simplest way to think about it: take one polished piece and one relaxed piece and put them together. A blazer with clean sneakers. A knit with tailored trousers. The tension between the two is the whole point.
It should look considered but not stiff. If a suit is a five and a tee and jeans is a one, smart casual lives around a three. Aim there and adjust to the room.

The look
A blazer or a fine knit
The polished half. An unstructured blazer or a merino crewneck is the smart-casual workhorse.
An oxford or a clean tee
Under the layer: a button-down for dressier, a heavyweight tee for more relaxed.
Chinos or tailored trousers
The relaxed base for a blazer, or the polished base for a knit. Well-hemmed, in a neutral.
Loafers or clean sneakers
A leather loafer leans smart; a minimal white sneaker leans casual. Either works.
The formula
One polished piece, one relaxed piece. A blazer (polished) with a tee and sneakers (relaxed) is smart casual. So is a knit (relaxed) with tailored trousers and loafers (polished). If both pieces are polished you are in suit territory; if both are relaxed you are just casual. The mix is the code.
Do
- Pair one polished piece with one relaxed piece.
- Keep colors neutral and let fit carry it.
- Iron the shirt and clean the shoes; details separate smart from casual.
- When unsure, lean a notch dressier.
Avoid
- Athletic wear, logos, or distressed denim.
- Matching everything so formally it tips back into a suit.
- Scuffed or dirty shoes.
- Anything you would wear to the gym.
