Cocktail attire is the evening dress code that sits between the office and black tie. For men that usually means a dark suit or a sharp blazer, no tuxedo required; for women, a cocktail dress or an elegant separate. The word to hold onto is evening: richer fabrics, darker colors, a bit of polish.
When the invitation says cocktail, err dressy. It is easier to loosen a tie than to wish you had worn one.
